Rocky Mountain’s Three Sport Star, Jake Stewart
By Bill Kelly

If Rocky Mountain Lobo outfielder Jake Stewart is not hitting a baseball he might be found catching a football or guarding his opponent’s best player on the hard court.

The three-sport junior who is an all-state first team receiver on the Rocky football team also helped lead his basketball team to the state tournament with all-state teammate Brian Glenn.

Aside from playing on last year’s 5A state champion Lobo baseball team he has returned to centerfield on this year’s state ranked team.

“I have always loved playing centerfield the best,” said Stewart, who is sporting a .300 batting average on the diamond and a 4.1 GPA in the classroom.

“Baseball has always been my favorite sport of all the sports I play,” he said.

It’s easy to see his resume is very impressive to college coaches.

Speaking of colleges, his favorite team is Virginia Tech.

“Both my parents went to Va Tech and they have been my favorite college sports team,” he added.

Stewart’s baseball talent made it to the national level a few months ago when Louisville Slugger named him to their 20008 preseason High School All American team.

Although he is currently batting .300 he would like to improve his hitting.
“I would like to be able to hit the ball to the right side more then I have been,” said Stewart.

It is doubtful hitting .300 would prove a deal breaker to a potential college coach on a state ranked team.

The current Rocky Mountain baseball team has a slew of talent including CSU-bound quarterback Alex Kelly.

Shortstop Andy Burns, who is headed for Kentucky on a baseball scholarship, and catcher Nick Wunsch are all part of last years state champion team as well.

The modest 17-year-old is undecided on what school he wants to attend but plans on majoring in sports management.
