The Art of a Base Stealer
By Ray Powell

Though the attention and money will always go to the big home run hitters, baseball still has a place for that most rare and exciting of breeds: the elite base stealer.
Anyone can swipe the occasional bag (heck, even Prince Fielder has nine to his credit), but there are precious few players who can steal a lot of bases, and steal them efficiently.
Mike Goldy knows that if he isn't careful, he can kill a rally just as fast as he can start one.
Goldy the former Mullen player now playing with the Denver Cougars in the college baseball league has over 30 stolen bases so far this summer heading into this weekends regional tournament at Double Angel Park in Parker.
The third baseman/outfielder say's, "I like to get on and just go. The coach has given me the green light to go when I want and I love to steal."
Goldy, who has not been thrown out this year, bats in the lower half of the order and likes to create problems for opposing pitchers and catchers.
"My hitting goes up and down with all the games we have played this summer," Goldy says. "But my base stealing is always there when I do get on."
The Cougars have played close to 60 games this summer and recently returned from a trip to California where they played against several Division-I players and teams.
"We played well and there was really not as big of gap in the talent as one might think." Goldy explains. "We were able to compete against all of the teams."
Goldy will be trying to help his team advance to the MDC World series this weekend when they open regional play against a team from Pueblo in the double elimination tournament.
"We have to win the tournament cause we did not win our league. We went 1-1 against them this year and we have the pitching and the power hitters to get it done, its just a matter of making it happen this weekend."
Last year Goldy went to Augustana College to play baseball but will be moving closer to home and playing at Northeastern Community College this next year.
"I just wanted to be a little closer to home and it's a good baseball school."
With Goldy's great speed he is certain to steal his way into their line-up too.
